And So It Continues

Meet creationist Don McLeroy. He is the Chairman of the Texas State Board of Education. And this is what he wants to teach your kids:

Someone has to stand up to experts? This guy is insane and needs to be removed from his position before he ruins children! You must realize how ridiculous this shit is.

From the video (that was cut short? not full?) it looks like he was saying that after a hundred and fifty years, there has not been fossil records to prove evolution correct. And arguing that it should not be presented in text books as scientific fact seems a reasonable request. You do not need an expert to tell a person that, which I believe he said. Also, the argument that "religion is holding back science" does not apply to this, seeing as how it isn't scientifically proven. I think saying "prove it's a fact before saying it is a fact" sounds more like true science than it does religion. Scientists have been saying the same thing to people practicing various religions for years. He also said that teaching it is just added curriculum, which while interesting to a point, is just that. Religion is interesting to a point, but I do not see people jumping on the "Hey, even though we don't have solid facts about religion, lets put it in public schools" train. One idea says "We used to be lizzards", one says "OMG GUY SWALLOWED BY WHALE!" If I'm gonna pick a non fact-based idea to follow, I'd rather pick one that comes with a few stories, and a book full of advice that you can either take or ignore, knowing you have a choice and aren't just put on the planet to have sex to carry over your genes. People can blame wars on religion all they like, but there was never a war fought over religion. Someone gained either land or money from every fight, so long as they won. People don't win wars and say "Well nice fight, lets just leave this place be....nice war there, fella. Oh yeah and I only did it like this because it was a holy war. I didn't really want anything out of it. Thank goodness I can just take my pride knowing that I won a victory, and leave everything here I was just fighting for, because I was definitely only fighting over religion. Nope, no trade agreement with you, sir. I just wanted to help." And as for the scripture about things people see as overly harsh, it's really how you look at it. How imperfections were not allowed at church previously, for example. If you have someone you think of as a friend, they're letting you live with them for free, and you know they think drinking and driving is for idiots and they told you so, but you did it anyway and completely screwed up your life, would you come home to your fried and say "I'm only paralyzed because of YOU! I can't believe YOU let this happen! YOU should take care of me for the rest of your life, even though now I'm about 100% useless to you now, and I can only sit here, moan and bitch all day. It's YOUR fault! I'm YOUR friend, YOU shouldn't have let me drive drunk. Now I'm never gonna work again, but YOU are gonna take care of me." And doing so, even a friend who cares for you, do you really think they would associate themselves with you? That doesn't seem unreasonable to me, though it is just an example. Everyone who says "Well if God were perfect, he would be catering to ME and love ME no matter what and do everything I want." is just wrong. I'm sure everyone has had a friend in high school or some shit who wanted you to buy everything for "the two of you." Did you really feel you were doing that person a favor? It's the whole "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach him to fish blah blah blah" thing. Most people do not even perceive the world correctly. For example, a lot of people know that their eyesight is vertically switched. Down is up, and up is down. But they still refer to "looking up at the sky." I think this is because knowing that you're a little hair hanging off of a ball in space, and that standing is actually pushing your further away from that ball and closer to the endless void space, would be entirely too nerve racking for some people.
